SPACE
This is the experience of our producer working with legendary Liverpool band Space.
I had the idea to work on a compilation LP that included bands from Liverpool, so I remember that once I went to HMV (the commercial music shop chain in England) in Liverpool city centre and I asked a person who worked there about which were, in his opinion, the best bands in Liverpool after the Beatles. And he recommended me a double compilation album by Space The Band.
I literally loved that album and really enjoyed most of the songs. The band sounded very different to the other Liverpool bands and above all they had many different musical influences while maintaining a strong musical identity of their own. So my idea was to ask them to join the project as a special guest band.
I couldn’t be happier when my invitation was accepted. Unlike all the other bands I worked with when they came to The Motor Museum recording studio, I didn’t know what to expect, which means I didn’t hear before what they were going to record that day, quite unusual. They brought two songs to record and I was impressed with the professional way they prepared the work before going to the studio. I can easily say that they are the most professional band I have ever worked with.
The 2 songs that they brought to record were already tracked on a demo, most of the sounds were already chosen, so the band just had to play over the prepared demo. When a band arrives well prepared at the studio, all the members need just a few takes to sort the work out. And that’s exactly what happened with Space, awesome.
Everyone was very nice and down to earth and that was great for me because I personally don’t like to work with arrogant people who think “they know everything”. Well that was not the case with Space. With them it was a great experience and I feel lucky I had this opportunity.
Space, compared to other Liverpool bands that I love like The Zutons and The Coral, have something that I especially like, they experiment with their sound, break their standards and look for something new, original and new influences. Those kind of bands will always be the most interesting bands for me.
