THE WHITE WIDOWS

In the practise room with The White Widows I was feeling as being a passenger of a train on fire, going at maximum speed and exploding at any moment. That time I had just arrived in Liverpool, I am not mother-language, so 5 people talking a fast and loud Scouse in an already loud room was a real challenge for me.

The thick fog of smoke all around in the small practise room prevented me at times from seeing the drums and I confess that various times I could not understand what was going on there. The only thing I was sure is that I was loving the music I was hearing.

A very Strong Liverpool identity (I love that), Rock, Punk, Reaggae, Ska are some of the influences that were coming out of the band while listening to them.

I remember they could write tunes in a second, fast and easy and jam for hours and hours, sometimes I had the impression they could go on forever. In any case what I clearly saw is that they couldn’t get enough of music and this is always beautiful to see when happens.

I heard immediately they could write catchy tunes without being trivial or cheesy but instead being punk, rough, ‘as they are’, intense, with a ‘no masks, more hearth and less thinking’ attitude to write music. Curious all that.

When we decided to record their Album, self titled ‘The White Widows, they already had all the songs. I was at the beginning with music production and we recorded almost all the LP at my school SAE Liverpool. Three song instead, I decided to recorded at The amazing Parr Street Studios, the most famous in Liverpool. I love the mixed style they had.

Songs like ‘English Sky’ which describes the dense, deep, grey of the sky in the U.K. accompanying everything with a clear reggae influenced beat and then returning to the wildest rock and roll. Same influence and structure with ‘Wasting our Time’. The tune ‘Circus’ instead reminds me the feeling I had in their practise room, and ‘Lately’ is a pearl that I would like to re-record now, having more experience.

The songwriting was a very strong point of The White Widows and who know them knows that. I always thought that the voice of the singer is between those one in a million amazing ‘Rock voices’ you can find around. That, musically, was another strong point of the band.

Well then, afterwards, that train I was talking about at the beginning of the post exploded and The White Widows decided to disband. I am note sure about the others but surely one of them now plays in a new great Liverpool band called @The Banshees who I defo recommend to all of my friends to have a listen to.
